One of the cool things about working in IT is the...interesting...hardware that we have to integrate with. We always keep in mind that we could receive unusual packages from our customers. (No, they’re not full of cash...we’re not a tax haven.) If our system has to be tested on your devices, then we need your devices.
So when our newest client casually mentioned that they had to send us a device for testing, we didn’t see a problem at all. “Of course”, we said “send it right over”. And that’s how we ended up trying to convince border security that this massive machine, with light projectors and HD cameras didn’t pose a threat to national security.
We had to describe the device (that we had never seen before). What it was, what we were using it for and how it connected with a laptop. They inspected it for a couple of weeks, looking for a hidden weapon, I guess. When they finally determined that it wasn’t dangerous, we received our “technological wonder”.
The delivery man wasn’t too pleased. At almost 1 meter wide and 30 kg, it might have been the most interesting part of his day. The mysterious device was packed inside a steel container and drew attention in the office.
All of a sudden, people started guessing what was inside. Despite our hopes and dreams, it did not contain a Time Machine. Just a simple Tire Tread Measuring Device. Some of the staff members were a little disappointed!
Nonetheless, the mystery package perked up the whole office for a little while. All it takes is something a little different to break the uniformity of our habits. As for me, I was just happy it finally arrived so we could get started! Now, we just have to figure out how to send it back...
